Jarabe de Palo Vocalist Pau Donés Dies at 53: Pau Donés, the singer of Jarabe de Palo, a popular Spanish melodic rock group has passed away on Tuesday June 9th after battling cancer for almost 5 years. He as 53 years old.

Pau Donés family have issued a statement on Twitter thanking the medical team and staff who had been treating him since he was diagnosed in August 2015. They have also asked for the utmost respect and privacy in the difficult times.

Donés was born in the north of Spain and grew up in Barcelona. He starting playing the guitar at the age of 15. As an admirer of Latin music, he mixed those rhythms with Catalan rumba and flamenco in songs such as “La Flaca”, which was released in 1996.

Since his colon cancer diagnosis, he has tried to dispel the stigma surrounding cancer by publically talking about his treatment with the media and on social media. He maintained a great sense of humor during his ordeal.

After announcing an indefinite retirement from stage just last year, he has resumed his musical activities and was planning on releasing his 14th album.

Several of Jarabe de Palo’s albums have been nominated for the Latin Grammy. Pau Donés has collaborated with many other famous international stars including Luciano Pavarotti, Alanis Morrisette and Ricky Martin.
