It’s taken long enough, but Super Mario Brothers is now playable online within your browser thanks to a HTML5 port from developer Josh Goldberg. Super Mario Bros. is a timeless classic that has won over generations of gamers and will continue to do so, thanks to this open source project.
Though the game stays true to the original, it does have some interesting additions that will appeal to many gamers. Firstly, you have the option to choose which level you’d like to start on, making it easy to continue your game from where you’ve left off if you don’t have the time to complete it in one playthrough.
The level designer allows you to easily create your own levels if you’re the creative type. It uses a very simple drag and drop design to place scenery and enemies, and every level you create can be downloaded into a simple text document to be shared with friends.
Perhaps the most enticing feature though, is the ability to play randomly generated maps. If you don’t have the time or patience to create maps of your own, this handy feature will let you jump into a random map and get your platforming on. This has the added benefit of testing the most hardcore of gamers as you’ll never know how easy or difficult the stage may be.
